BioBran MGN-3 is a rice-bran arabinoxylan food supplement developed by Daiwa Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. in Japan more than three decades ago. It has been the subject of over 70 peer-reviewed research papers, many examining BioBran in relation to immune function. This includes extensive research by Associate Professor Mamdooh Ghoneum of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles.

What Is BioBran MGN-3 Arabinoxylan?

BioBran MGN-3 Arabinoxylan is produced from rice bran using a patented enzymatic process. Rice bran contains hemicellulose B, a soluble dietary fibre composed principally of arabinose and xylose. During the manufacture of BioBran, this is treated with carbohydrate-splitting enzymes derived from shiitake mushroom mycelia to produce smaller, water-soluble arabinoxylan compounds.

This specialised formulation is quite different from ordinary rice bran or a conventional bran fibre supplement. The resulting rice-bran arabinoxylan compound has been studied for more than three decades, including extensive laboratory and human research examining its interaction with different components of the immune system.

BioBran MGN-3 and Immune Function Research

A substantial part of the published research on BioBran MGN-3 has examined immune function. Researchers have investigated its relationship with cytokines and different types of immune cells, including natural killer (NK) cells, T cells, B cells, dendritic cells and macrophages. Studies have also examined different aspects of immune-cell activity and immune response.

One particularly interesting feature reported in the BioBran research is the apparent absence of hyporesponsiveness during continued use. Hyporesponsiveness is the progressive reduction in biological response that can occur when certain biological response modifiers are repeatedly administered. Published BioBran research has reported maintained NK-cell responsiveness during prolonged use rather than a progressive tail-off in response. This characteristic has been discussed in several peer-reviewed papers as distinguishing BioBran from some other biological response modifiers.

The important distinction is that these are not simply marketing claims made about an unstudied supplement. BioBran MGN-3 has been the subject of a substantial body of published scientific research specifically examining these areas of immune function.

The Importance of Normal Immune Function

The immune system is a complex network involving white blood cells, antibodies, bone marrow, cytokines, the thymus gland and many other components. Normal immune function forms an important part of maintaining health and responding to the biological challenges encountered in everyday life.

This is the area in which BioBran MGN-3 has attracted particular scientific interest. Research has examined BioBran in relation to natural killer cells and numerous other components of immune function rather than relying solely on the generalised claims often associated with immune-system supplements.

The scale of this research is unusual for a proprietary natural food supplement. A major peer-reviewed scoping review published in 2023 identified 98 primary research articles on rice-bran arabinoxylan compounds, with nearly 87% of that research based on BioBran MGN-3. The research involved hundreds of authors and institutions across numerous countries. This gives BioBran MGN-3 an unusually substantial international research record for a proprietary food supplement.

Using BioBran MGN-3

BioBran MGN-3 can be incorporated into a daily food-supplement regime. It is particularly well known because of the extensive published research examining BioBran and different aspects of immune function. BioBran MGN-3 is sold as a food supplement and is not intended to prevent, treat or cure disease.

Please note: BioBran is not an ordinary bran or high-fibre supplement. It is a specific water-soluble arabinoxylan formulation derived from rice bran using an enzymatic manufacturing process.

Research and Scientific Background

BioBran MGN-3 has been studied for more than three decades. Researchers associated with Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and numerous other academic institutions in the United States, Japan, Europe and elsewhere have investigated the compound. Much of the early research was led by Associate Professor Mamdooh Ghoneum, with later research involving investigators at many other institutions.

The published work includes laboratory, animal and human studies examining BioBran MGN-3, natural killer (NK) cells and other aspects of immune function. A 2023 review of the wider rice-bran arabinoxylan research literature identified contributions from 289 authors at 100 institutions across 18 countries, with the great majority of the research centred on BioBran MGN-3. For more information about the scientific literature, please visit the BioBran research site in our links section.

Safety and Suggested Use

BioBran MGN-3 also has a substantial body of safety data. Manufacturer toxicology testing reports a negative Ames mutagenicity test and an acute LD50 greater than 36 g/kg in rats. Repeated-dose testing has also established high no-observed-adverse-effect levels.

Its safety record in human research is also reassuring. Published reviews of the BioBran and rice-bran arabinoxylan literature have reported no adverse events attributed to the supplement in the human studies reviewed, while clinical laboratory measurements have not indicated adverse effects on liver or kidney function. These findings, together with the toxicology data and long history of research, support a favourable safety profile for BioBran MGN-3 when used appropriately.

Enzymes derived from shiitake mushroom mycelia are used during manufacture, although the finished product is a rice-bran arabinoxylan formulation rather than a mushroom supplement. Always follow the directions and cautions supplied with the product.

Available Sizes

BioBran MGN-3 is available in 50 x 250mg tablet blister packs, and 30 & 105 x 1000mg (1g) powder sachets. Both tablets and sachets provide the same BioBran MGN-3 formulation, so the choice is principally one of dosage convenience. Those taking smaller quantities often prefer tablets, whilst sachets provide a convenient option for larger quantities. The powder can be mixed with water.

BioBran Suggested Use:

  • General Use: 500 mg to 1 g of BioBran MGN-3 per day (2–4 tablets or one 1g sachet).
  • 1g Daily Intake: One 1000 mg sachet, or the equivalent quantity in tablets, provides a convenient daily 1g intake.
  • Higher Intake: A higher-intake programme sometimes used with BioBran is 3 grams per day for one month, followed by 1 gram per day thereafter.
  • Administration: BioBran MGN-3 can be taken with water after meals. Where the daily intake is divided, portions can be taken after breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Overview

BioBran MGN-3 is a proprietary water-soluble arabinoxylan food supplement derived from rice bran and developed in Japan more than three decades ago. It has an unusually extensive published research record for a proprietary natural food supplement, with much of that research examining BioBran in relation to immune function, natural killer (NK) cells and other components of the immune response.

Its research history is complemented by a favourable published safety record, including animal toxicology testing and human studies in which no BioBran-related adverse events were reported. For customers interested in immune-function research and looking for a natural food supplement with an unusually substantial scientific background, BioBran MGN-3 stands apart from many products in this category.

Children: BioBran MGN-3 is primarily formulated for adults. For children, we recommend seeking appropriate professional advice before use, particularly when deciding the amount to take.

Directions: For general daily use, take 2–4 tablets (500mg–1g) or one sachet (1g) per day with meals. A higher-intake programme sometimes used with BioBran MGN-3 is 3 grams per day for 8 weeks, followed by 1 gram per day thereafter. The powder can be dissolved in a small amount of water. Tablets should be taken with meals, while sachets can be taken approximately 20 minutes after a meal.

Contraindications and cautions: Do not take if hypersensitive to any of the ingredients. If you are taking immunosuppressant medication, or are under medical supervision, seek appropriate professional advice before using BioBran MGN-3. As with any food supplement, check its suitability if you have an existing medical condition or take regular medication.

Allergens & tolerability: Both forms contain small amounts of corn starch as a filler; the tablets also contain a small amount of cocoa as a natural colourant. Enzymes derived from shiitake mushroom mycelia are used during manufacture, although the finished product is a rice-bran arabinoxylan formulation rather than a mushroom supplement. If you are sensitive to mushrooms or any of the listed ingredients, check suitability before use.
