Although it sounds like a breakfast cereal, Biobran is actually a powerful natural immunomodulator created by a Japanese pharmaceutical company in league with an American immunology professor and researcher. The uniqueness of this immunomodulator is its effectiveness and safety: usually substances that promote immunity are either toxic to the body, or their immunomodulatory effect is small (but exaggerated in the marketing). Biobran is different. Not only does it have an enormous immunomodulatory effect, there are no side-effects of this natural substance, and not only that, it tastes okay, meaning compliance is high. (The only obvious contraindication is that those on immunosuppressants should not take it.)
This concise and well-written little book begins with the immune system, and more specifically with the effect of lysed rice bran on powerfully modulating immune function, especially the innate system spearheaded by NK cells, although it does also have significant effect in boosting the activity of both T and B cells, which encourages faster priming of the adaptive immune system. This proprietary lysed rice bran, called RBAC and MGN-3 in research papers, and commercially called Biobran, is therefore the primary supplement for stimulating weak immune function, safely and effectively. According to one of its primary developers, immunologist Professor M. Ghoneum, more effectively and safely than any other natural compounds that he has ever tested.
The book also describes how Biobran can have a protective effect in the body, including protecting the liver, for those undergoing toxic medical treatments, making it an ideal complementary supplement to add to any treatment protocol. Indeed, several doctors (Dr. Patrick Kingsley, Dr. Ben Pfeifer, Dr. Julian Kenyon, Professor Serge Jurasunas, and Dr. Roger Lichy) give their accounts in the book of using Biobran to enhance their treatments, relaying how important a supplement it has become for many practitioners.
In the final third of the book, Bright chronicles the benefits of Biobran for various chronic medical conditions, and how it can really make a difference in outcome, and smooth the journey back to health.
Bright also makes the point that Biobran has a huge advantage over other "me too" natural immunity supplements which rely almost exclusively on marketing to promote the effectiveness of their food supplements. Biobran, on the other hand, has a manufacturer — Daiwa Pharmaceutical Ltd in Japan — who is dedicated to putting significant investment money into peer-reviewed research (over 70 papers now), something that is very unusual for a proprietary natural supplement. So what speaks in favour of Biobran is its use in over two decades of case studies (some of which are outlined in Spencer's book), and the fact that its manufacturer is willing to keep putting it to the test. As a result, it is considered the gold standard in natural immune system support, a case that Bright eloquently makes in his fascinating book.
