Simple changes can reduce risk of heart disease

13th February 2013

Experts have provided a number of simple steps that people can take to improve their heart health.

Many people believe there is little they can do to reduce their risk of developing heart disease, but the opposite is in fact true, according to cardiologists.

Experts say there are plenty of small changes that people can make on a day-to-day basis to improve their heart health, such as moving about more, getting more sleep and trying to give up smoking.

Dr Martha Grogan, a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic in the US, says: "When I tell people that almost 80 per cent of heart disease is preventable, they are surprised.

"Better yet, there are daily things we all can do that can make a big difference in our effort to keep our hearts healthy."

To begin with, people who are concerned about their heart health should try to be physically active for ten extra minutes each day, as recent research shows that a sedentary lifestyle is almost as bad for the heart as smoking.

Easy ways to move about more include walking around the office to talk to colleagues instead of sending emails, or making phone calls on the move instead of on the sofa.

Dr Grogan says people can reduce their risk of heart disease by as much as 50 per cent, simply by moving for just ten minutes each day.

Other changes that can make a difference include giving up smoking and tackling high blood pressure, says Dr Randal Thomas, who specialises in preventive cardiology.

And he insists that these changes really can make a difference to people's heart health.

"There's a saying that heart disease is what nature gives you for breaking its rules," the expert claims.

"But you have a second chance. Healthy lifestyle habits can help you reduce a majority of your risks for heart attack."

Another thing that people can do to promote good heart health is to ensure they consume plenty of antioxidants, as they have protective properties, or possibly to use a full-spectrum antioxidant complex such as AlphaGuard Plus.

Supplied byThe Really Healthy Company, this food supplement combines many of the most effective antioxidant nutrients and complexes, such as vitamin C, grape seed, curcumin and green tea extracts, and lycopene.

This makes it the ideal food supplement for those who worry about getting enough antioxidants from their daily diet.
