Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

 

What is it?

Vitamin B5 or Pantothenic Acid is a water soluble vitamin.

What does it do?

  • Energy production, B5 is involved in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.
  • Used by the adrenal glands in the manufacture of anti-stress hormones. Larger amounts are used in times of stress by the body.

Deficiency Symptoms

  • Tiredness, lack of energy
  • Anxiety, tension
  • Burning feet or tender heels

Recommended Daily Amount (RDA)

Children & Adults 3 – 7mg

B vitamins tend to function best when in combination with the other B vitamins, rather than in isolation, it is usually recommended that it B5 is supplemented as part of a B complex.

Therapeutic amounts are generally considered to be slightly higher than RDAs.

Food Sources

'Pantothenic' comes from the Greek word pantos meaning everywhere, in other words it is found in many food sources. Some of the best are, organ meats, peanuts, wholegrains, avocados, green leafy vegetables and strawberries.
