Eating well in Winter

Christmas is well regarded as a time to overindulge on food and drink, all those Christmas parties and get togethers can leave us feeling sluggish, bloated and lacking in energy which is why it's important to make sure you don't eat or drink to excess.

Eating a healthy diet is fundamentally important for enjoying robust health. Regardless of where you are on your health journey, choosing wholesome nutritious foods is important to help achieve and maintain health. Many individuals find eating well a challenge as the days grow shorter, but this needn't be the case.

The shorter days of winter can sometimes lead to lower moods, generally referred to as SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder. While the degree to which this affects people varies greatly, most people do become a little more lethargic and less motivated to stay active due to there being less sunlight and colder weather. Often we tend to reach for our favourite comfort foods to lift our moods. For those of us who do suffer from SAD, vitamin D is the order of the day, while it is difficult to obtain from food you can take it in supplement form to ensure you get an adequate supply every day.

There are also many recipe books out now that can show you how to prepare delicious healthy meals and with a little knowledge and planning you can keep comfort foods comforting without sabotaging your efforts to eat well. When it's cold outside, nothing warms better than some of our old favourites such as hearty stews and casseroles so do be sure to include lots of fresh vegetables such as pumpkin, sweet potato, turnips and carrots that are abundant at this time of year. Using herbs like rosemary, sage and thyme not only enhances flavour but they can also have therapeutic benefits too. Adding more fresh fruit and vegetables to your diet helps to ramp up your intake of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients that help keep your immune system boosted and ready to fight off any cold or flu.

And there is no need to be concerned about salads in cold weather, there are many warm salads that can be enjoyed, by using warm ingredients like cooked lentils, salmon or potato you can make it more of a meal while still eating a healthy salad.

Another good boost energy booster is making sure you consume enough water every day. I often hear people griping about how drinking water in cold weather leaves them feeling cold all day. This needn't be that case. You don't have to drink plain cold water to keep yourself hydrated, try refreshing hot herbal teas, or hot water and lemon. As long as you consume enough fluid you will not dehydrate.

Christmas can be stressful enough as it is, by following these simple guidelines you can do your best keep both your mind and body in good health.
