Lacking A Spring In Your Step?

Come rain or shine, are you getting enough Vitamin D?

Did you know that in Italy they have a paint colour called ‘London Grey’, seriously?  In our winter newsletter we stressed the importance of supporting our body with antioxidants to purge the Christmas excess and sedentary behaviour associated with the season. In addition to this Jackie Power BSc(Hons) ITEC MIFPA covered how important it was to regularly supplement with Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is still very much in the forefront of the press and public. This is partly because April has been the rainiest April on record, and also because of the recent media attention on a couple whose child was removed from the home, subsequently to have died, and their new baby taken away from the parents at birth when in was falsely assumed they had been abusing their child. All along the child was suffering from rickets. Despite the doctors being some of the finest pediatricians in the land, they misdiagnosed the child and didn't recognize rickets as the cause of his problem.

Who would believe in the land of the sun, yes, Australia, Rickets is on the rise. It is in fact believed to be brought on by the excessive use of sun screens. We in the UK have barely glimpsed the sun, so why worry about the over use of sun screens? In the Northern Hemisphere, during the height of summer, the sun does not rise high enough for us to benefit and synthesis much vitamin D. You'd have to join a Naturists organisation and bare your body for most of the day to get anywhere near the recommended dose. And the Vitamin D from the sun would then need to be on the skin for a period of 24 hours before it would be fully absorbed. Most of us clean our bodies in the shower after being in the sun. These are some explanations as to why most of the population is not getting enough useable Vitamin D.

The Chief Medical Officer is now trying to educate health professionals and the general public about the importance of supplementing with vitamin D. Their statement is that they "have always advised the British Public, especially between the months of October- May, to supplement with Vitamin D." And, they continue, "ALL lactating mothers and pregnant women should all supplement with vitamin D" They have 'concluded' that it is because the public at large have not heeded this vitamin D advice to begin with from the medical establishment, that we have rickets on the rise to epidemic proportions.

The Feeding for Life Foundation tells us that 74% of UK parents are also unaware of the Health Department's recommendations for vitamin D supplementation. Not surprising when so much has been spent on the mass media misinformation campaigns about food supplements. It's hammered home that vitamin supplements are 'dangerous' and unnecessary as you can get all you need from a balanced diet. Then suddenly, parents find out that they should have been supplementing with vitamin D all along (source Alliance for Natural Health).

New study looks at link between children's bone health and mothers' vitamin D levels during pregnancy

A Deakin University study is investigating the impact a mother's vitamin D levels during pregnancy has on the bone health of her children.

With funding from the BUPA Health Foundation, Deakin Medical School's Associate Professor Julie Pasco is leading the study that builds on 2002 research that found poor bone growth in infants whose mothers had low vitamin D levels during pregnancy.

"We now have a unique opportunity to measure the growth and development of these children as they turn nine," said Associate Professor Pasco, Head of Deakin's Barwon Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit based at Barwon Health in Geelong.

"Whilst it is clear that severe vitamin D deficiency in mothers is associated with soft bones (rickets) in their offspring, more information is required about the effects of moderately low levels of vitamin D during pregnancy.

"As part of this study, we will measure body size, bone growth, muscle development and the amount of fat tissue in the children."

Associate Professor Pasco said the study was poised to contribute new information to inform a growing policy debate regarding vitamin D supplementation recommendations during pregnancy.

"Osteoporosis is a major public health problem in Australia and its prevalence is set to escalate as the population ages. Therefore, having the highest possible peak bone mass in all young adults is a high priority public health goal," she said.

"It is likely that optimizing vitamin D levels in all pregnant women will improve peak bone mass in their offspring into adulthood."

The study involves about 350 children from the Geelong region and will take three years to complete.

Answers to readers' questions

Q: I keep reading that antioxidants are important in one's diet yet there are so many. I'm confused about what they do and which ones I need. Can you help?

A: Antioxidants are nutrients that are naturally present in fruit and vegetables and are vital for our health and well being mostly because they protect us from reactive molecules in our cells and tissues called free radicals. These free radicals are the by-product waste of normal cell metabolism, the pollution and toxins in the body, as well as the effects of environmental radiation. Left in our body, these compounds over time wreak havoc on our cells and our tissues and can result in premature ageing or more serious degenerative problems such as heart disease and arthritis. So it is very important to ensure that our bodies receive a wide variety of antioxidant protection. This can be achieved through both diet and supplementation. The most common known antioxidants are Vitamins A, C and E, Zinc and Selenium. These can fairly easily be obtained from the diet by consuming a wide range of foods that include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains, preferably organic. Other essential antioxidants such as Grapeseed, Curcumin, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Lycopene are more difficult to acquire through diet alone, especially in the amounts the body requires for adequate support. In these instances, it would be advisable to take a high quality antioxidant supplement, that works in the body synergistically and is able to insure that daily optimal levels of antioxidant protection are received that can safeguard our body from free radical attack.

Q: I have been trying to get my 5 year old son to eat more vegetables but he just refuses, any suggestions as to how I can get him to eat more greens?

A: One of the best ways to get young children, or even adults for that matter, to eat more greens is to hide them in a fruit smoothie or sweet vegetable juice like carrot juice. Green smoothies and sweet juices have recently become more popular because they are an easy and effective way of making sure you get enough green foods without having to munch through a whole paddock every lunch time. In the case of your son, I suggest that you add a small amount of green leaves, say spinach leaves, and a few grains of Klamath Blue Green Algae to your smoothie or juice and build up over a few weeks to about a handful of leaves and quarter teaspoon (1 capsule / 250mg) of the algae. This will make your smoothie a powerhouse of good nutrition because Klamath Algae is rich in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients as well as antioxidants. Here's a refreshing hot weather smoothie recipe you could try making for your child. Blend together the following ingredients:

250mL Pineapple juice

Quarter teaspoon of KBG Algae

Half a banana

2 handfuls of frozen mixed berries

3 to 4 ice cubes

1 handful of greens e.g. spinach

But remember that fruit juices can be very sweet, so it is important to also have sweetish vegetable juices to provide some contrast and lower the sugar-content of the diet.
