The Really Healthy Company Newsletter
  September 2011 Newsletter

Dear Practitioner

Welcome to Really Healthy's September news and education update. The first of September is the official end of summer and the beginning of autumn. According to the Met Office those of us who stayed in the UK have just experienced one of our worst summers ever. But at RHC we have put the rainy days of August to good use and have been preparing new ideas, new products and new events.

We have two new announcements to make in this newsletter. 1) The first is the addition of Medical Herbalist Jackie Power BSc (Hons) ITEC MIFPA as an adviser to our team. 2) The introduction of two Q&A's per newsletter. We have no new products this newsletter, though we do have some in the pipeline, more on these at a later date. On request (for those who were on holiday) we are extending the special offer on our fresh and live Organic Royal Jelly. We also have updates on the recent programme of seminars, talks, workshops and recent press.

Special Promotion

organic royal jellyOrganic Royal Jelly fresh and live - Certified Organic Fresh Royal Jelly. Used nutritionally for general health, vitality, immunity, skin and complexion.

Royal jelly is a nutritious, creamy white liquid produced by bees which is so nutritionally powerful that it can turn normal lava into a queen bee with a lifespan many many times longer than that of normal bees.

Fresh royal jelly contains nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), vitamins (A, B, C, and E), minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc and manganese), enzymes and gelatin (a precursor of collagen which is why those who take it believe it helps keep their skin looking youthful). The product also has in it globulinic acid (gamma globulin) which not only helps the body increase viral and bacterial resistance but also helps feed the natural hormone balance. This unique nutritional profile makes royal jelly a protective product, helping us to attain optimum immunity. This is especially important as we get older, and also for situations where we are crowded together in planes, buses, trains and cars.

Q & A

We receive numerous calls to our office from Healthcare Professionals, Practitioners and Public alike, with both product and general health queries. At times there tends to be some repetition in the questions asked and for this reason we thought it would be good to share one of two of these with you each newsletter. Juliet Hayward and Jackie Power will be available to answer any additional queries that may rise from either the questions or answers.

Q.Why are some herbs no longer available over the counter or via my practitioner?

A: New EU regulations require manufacturers of herbal products to apply for a licence for EACH product and comply with the Government's official published standards. This is an expensive process for what are mostly small companies.

The Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive (THMPD) came in to law in the UK in April 2011. There has been a lengthy transitional period as this directive (2004/24/EC) was agreed by EU states in 2004. The result is that many herbs and herbal tablets which have been safely used for years are now withdrawn and will be subject to a licensing system by the UK Medicine Health Regulatory Control Agency (MHRA). This means that many of the more popular herbs products such as Garlic, Ginseng and Echinacea may still be commercially viable but other herbs may disappear because it will not be worth of getting them licensed.

Anyone found selling unlicensed herbal products will be prosecuted. The MHRA will allow shops and practitioners to use stocks of unlicensed herbs bought before April 2011 to be sold.

The only herbal medicines that are exempted from the provisions of the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive are those unlicensed remedies that are made up for a patient following a consultation with a Medical Herbalist - for the time being.

Scientific Studies

We came across an interesting study on Potential therapeutic effects of Curcumin the anti-inflammatory agent, against neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases. The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology

Bharat B. Aggarwal, a, and Kuzhuvelil B. Harikumar

Cytokine Research Laboratory, Department of Experimental Therapeutics, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, United States

Abstract

Although safe in most cases, ancient treatments are ignored because neither their active component nor their molecular targets are well defined. This is not the case, however, with curcumin, a yellow-pigment substance and component of turmeric (Curcuma longa), which was identified more than a century ago. For centuries it has been known that turmeric exhibits anti-inflammatory activity, but extensive research performed within the past two decades has shown that this activity of turmeric is due to curcumin (diferuloylmethane). This agent has been shown to regulate numerous transcription factors, cytokines, protein kinases, adhesion molecules, redox status and enzymes that have been linked to inflammation. The process of inflammation has been shown to play a major role in most chronic illnesses, including neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases. In the current review, we provide evidence for the potential role of curcumin in the prevention and treatment of various proinflammatory chronic diseases. These features, combined with the pharmacological safety and negligible cost, render curcumin an attractive agent to explore further.

The Study also mentions that curcumin ‘exhibits poor bioavailability' and that ways of making it more bioavailable are being 'explored'.

AlphaCurcuminThe Really Healthy Company AlphaCurcumin Complex Plus is a highly absorbable curcumin complex food supplement. It has a special bio-available form of curcumin complex that is 6.93 times more than any other normal Curcumin and 6.3 times more than Curcumin-Lecithin-Piperine formula. A small amount of Bioperine (black pepper extract) has been added.

Biobran News Update

As I write there is a lot of activity with Biobran and we are particularly excited about the potential of one study in particular and the interest it will (is already) create. It is about to be published so it will be another month or two before we can bring it to the wider public attention!

Meanwhile we look forward to updating you with other research papers and studies as soon as we have got back from ‘The Fourth Biobran European Distributors‘workshop that takes place in Vienna 8th & 9th October.

This years speakers who will be presenting their papers include: -

Dr. Csoka: Oncologist, Slovakia, Treatment of a patient with Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Biobran MGN-3

Prof. Dr. Med Rupert Hangretinger: Paediatric Clinic - Haematology/Oncology ward, Children and Youth Clinic, Tubingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany will present his study - Investigation of the influence of food supplement (Biobran MGN-3) on NK cells function in oncological patients. This study is about to be published.

Recommendations

In light of the current market financial uncertainty we can appreciate that your clients are affected by this, which means you are being careful in what supplements you are suggesting to them that they purchase. As a lot of our products are specialist niche and leading edge nutritional supplements of the highest quality it means the cost could be high. We refer in particular to Biobran and the Pfeifer protocol used in the treatment of particular cancers. Our dream would be that all cancer sufferers could obtain these treatments via the NHS, but the likelihood of that in the foreseeable future is highly unlikely.

For this reason we would like to draw to your attention to a cancer survivor's website; John Davidson, www.self-helpcancer.org. In particular Complementary help for Cancer Patients from the NHS http://www.self-helpcancer.org/nhs.htm.

We don't recommend external sites lightly, but if you do have clients who wish to use these products and cannot afford them, then this information is worth remembering. It needs to be patient led, so your clients will have to be forceful with their GP's. There have been GP's in the past who have prescribed Biobran to their patients, but most of them will not know the product. We suggest your clients refer them to www.biobran.org for further information. If you require additional information feel free to contact us 020 8480 1000 or Juliet Hayward BA(Hons), MA, DNN on 020 8480 1000 ext. 7008 or by email juliet@healthy.co.uk or visit http://www.healthy.co.uk/practitioners/biobran.html.
