The two leading causes of visual loss and blindness are cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These can be caused by simple ageing, poor diet, smoking, obesity and too much exposure to sunlight.
In terms of diet, it is important for us to have as much pigmented vegetables in our diet so that we can receive the nutrients that can be helpful for eye health and macular protection. These include Vitamins A, E and C, zinc and carotenoids such as Lutein and Zeaxanthin. You can find these in many vegetables and fruits such as yellow peppers, mangoes, bilberries, green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, chard and broccoli), oranges, tangerines and eggs.
Sometimes our diets are not sufficient and it can be helpful to supplement with nutritional supplements containing some of these nutritional factors. |
